If you’ve spent any time spinning grid slots over the last couple of years, Kart Rush is going to feel incredibly familiar. It shares its board, its buy prices and its multiplier rules with Microgaming’s own Whale Rush, only now on a cartoon racing track. And Pragmatic Play’s Sugar Rush Super Scatter runs the same marking grid.

But does slapping a racing theme on a proven math model make it worth your bankroll? I took it for a session to find out.

The Base Game: Paytable Poverty & The Multiplier Engine

Kart Rush is a 7×7 tumbling grid slot where the actual symbols you land matter far less than the empty space they leave behind. You need a cluster of at least five matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically to trigger a cascade. Microgaming lists the RTP at 96.04% and the volatility as very high.

The base paytable is thin. The Red Racer is the only symbol that returns your stake for a minimum cluster of five. Everything else, from the lower-tier racers to the traffic cones and bananas, pays absolute pennies.

So, where is the money? It’s in the grid itself.

Every time a winning cluster pops, it leaves a faint mark on the board. If a second win cascades over that exact same mark during the same spin, that cell turns into a x2 multiplier. Every subsequent win on that spot doubles the value (x4, x8, x16, all the way up to a massive x1024). If a winning cluster covers multiple multiplier spots, they are added together before boosting your payout.

But in the base game, the board wipes clean the second your spin ends. During my session, I hit stretches of 8 to 10 dead spins in a row. When the cascades finally did cooperate, the window closed fast. My best base-game hit came from a chain of three drops that built a few x2 spots before a cluster of bananas landed on them, paying out a measly 3x my bet.

The Bonus Round: Sticky Multipliers & Instant Max Wins

The game’s 10,000x max win can be chased in two ways, and this is where Kart Rush actually gets exciting.

The Super Scatter Instant Win

This is the mechanic that sets the game apart from standard grid slots. Alongside regular scatters, you can land “Super Scatters.” If these are part of your bonus trigger, they pay out fixed cash prizes. One Super Scatter pays 100x, two pay 500x, and if you manage to land four or more, the game hands you the 10,000x max win cap before the free spins even start. It’s a brilliant, adrenaline-pumping addition.

The Free Spins Feature

Triggered by three or more scatters, this is the main event. The one frustrating rule of the base game is thrown out the window: the multiplier spots no longer reset between spins.

If you build a spot up to x16 on spin one, it sits there waiting for the rest of the bonus. The deeper you get into the free spins, the more the board looks like a minefield of massive multipliers. Suddenly, those cheap five-symbol banana clusters are turning into massive payouts.

The Bonus Buys: Proceed With Caution

Because Kart Rush leans so heavily on its multiplier grid, Microgaming has included “Boost” options to let you pay for a head start. But these are highly volatile gambles.

  • Super Spin 1 (10x your bet): Raises your bet to 10x on every spin until you switch it off, and each base spin starts with marks or random multiplier spots from x2 to x128 already active.
  • Super Spin 2 (250x your bet): This raises your bet to 250x on every spin until you switch it off, and each base spin starts with every cell on the board at x32.

Keep in mind how Kart Rush works: a board full of massive multipliers is completely worthless if the symbols don’t connect on top of them.

It plays exactly like Whale Rush and runs the same grid as Sugar Rush Super Scatter (though Pragmatic’s version boasts a 50,000x max win compared to this game’s 10,000x).

However, if you prefer cartoon karts over candy or sea creatures, it’s a perfectly capable, highly volatile slot. Just go in with your eyes open. The base game will drain your balance if you aren’t careful, and the Super Spin feature is a massive gamble. But when you finally get into the Free Spins and the grid starts doubling up to x512 and beyond, it’s easy to see why this math model is so incredibly popular.
