Honest Review: The Castle of Slotenstein (Evoplay)

I’m just going to say it upfront: Evoplay’s The Castle of Slotenstein (which randomly calls itself 3 Pumpkins on the loading screen) is a game of two extremes. It’s got a surprisingly generous bonus game trapped behind one of the most boring base games I’ve played in a while.

Here’s the rundown on whether it’s actually worth your time and money.

The Base Game is a Total Snooze Fest

If you’re spinning normally, prepare for a grind. The maximum bet is a ridiculous 20,000 a spin, but I wouldn’t recommend going heavy here. The 5×3 base game is brutal. The top symbol (Dr. Slotenstein) only pays out 15x for a full line, and wilds don’t even land on the first reel, so they rarely help you start a win.

Most of the time, you’re just hitting low-paying royal symbols that pay back half your bet. There are no fun teases, either. If a single scatter pumpkin lands, it does nothing and disappears on the next spin. Basically, the base game is just a waiting room for the bonus.

The Bonus Round Actually Slaps (The Clearing Columns)

To get to the good stuff, you need to land coloured pumpkins (green, purple, or blue). Four guarantees the bonus, though sometimes you get lucky and trigger it with fewer.

Once you’re in, it’s a classic Hold-and-Win game with a really awesome twist. You get three spins to land orange cash pumpkins (worth 0.5x to 5x your bet), and your spins reset every time one hits. Standard stuff, right? But here is where the game actually gets fun: when you fill an entire column, the game banks the money and clears the reel.

That means a single column can fill up, empty out, and pay you multiple times in the same bonus round. It is super satisfying.

Boosters & The Bonus Buy “Trap”

Those coloured pumpkins that trigger the bonus also act as modifiers:

  • Green (Shock): Gives you 4 spins instead of 3.
  • Purple (Trick): Adds its value to everything on its reel, then clones itself into the empty spaces.
  • Blue (Treat): Adds its value to the entire board.

Because of these, a tiny 1x pumpkin can easily snowball into 15x or more.

Now, here is a massive pro-tip if you like to buy bonuses: Do not buy the expensive one.

The game lets you pay 48x your bet for random boosters, or 96x for guaranteed boosters. Weirdly, the cheaper 48x buy actually has a higher RTP (96.35% vs 96.24%). Paying double is a trap. I’ve had the premium 96x buy completely stall out and pay 65x, while the cheap 48x option frequently clears 60x. Save your money and stick to the cheap buy.

The Jackpot Wheel (Don’t Hold Your Breath)

Hanging above the reels is the “Grand Reel of Fortune.” To unlock it, you have to fill all five columns at least once during a bonus round.

Honestly? It’s a tall order. You can easily go 30+ spins in a bonus, clear out multiple columns, and still have that one stubborn reel that just won’t fill. And if you do manage to unlock the wheel, don’t get too excited – it almost always lands on the smallest 50x prize.

The Verdict

The absolute max win on this slot is 3,127.5x your bet, and almost all of that is locked behind the 3,000x GRAND prize on the wheel.

While that might sound low compared to games like Booming Buffalo screaming about a 25,000x max win you will literally never hit, Slotenstein’s cap actually feels realistic. It’s got way better math than a lot of other games in this genre (like Lava Power).

TL;DR: The base game is totally forgettable, and the jackpot wheel is mostly bait. But the column-clearing mechanic in the bonus is genuinely great. Just stick to the 48x bonus buy, enjoy the board resets, and treat the jackpot wheel as a lucky extra rather than the main goal.
