If you’re tired of Megaways grids exploding with a million cascading symbols and just want to get back to basics, Onlyplay’s Greece Fruits might catch your eye. Stripping the classic fruit machine down to its barest bones, this 3×3, 5-payline slot is a slow burn.

But is it worth your bankroll? After a session on it, here is my honest take.

The Base Game: Treading Water

Let’s not sugarcoat it: the base game in Greece Fruits is a grind. Because the grid is only three columns wide, you need exactly three-of-a-kind to win anything. There are no wilds to save a near-miss, and no multipliers to spice up the standard spins.

The paytable is exceptionally flat. Out of the eight fruit symbols, the bottom four (oranges, olives, pears, and cherries) pay exactly 1x your bet. Landing one of these doesn’t build your balance; it just buys you another spin. Things improve slightly as you move up to pomegranates (2x) and lemons (4x), peaking at figs (6x) and grapes (10x).

Because of this math, the lines alone top out at 50x your bet on a base game spin, and only the jackpots below lift a single spin past that. During my session, the base game was incredibly quiet. My best hit was a 6x payout from three diagonal figs, while the vast majority of my wins were just money-back 1x lines.

Full-Screen Jackpots

To break up the base game monotony, Onlyplay has included three fixed jackpots. You don’t need to collect special coins to trigger these; you just need to land a “full screen” (all nine cells) of specific fruits:

  • Mini Jackpot (25x): Full screen of Lemons
  • Major Jackpot (100x): Full screen of Figs
  • Grand Jackpot (1,000x): Full screen of Grapes

It’s a nice touch that gives you a tangible target to aim for, though you’ll need plenty of patience to see one land.

Free Spins and the Multiplier Reel

If the base game is just a warm-up, the Free Spins feature is the main event. You’ll need to land three painted vase Scatters anywhere on the board to trigger 10 Free Spins. (Be prepared for a few frustrating “teasers”: I landed two vases a handful of times during my session).

Once triggered, the mechanics completely shift. A fourth reel slides in next to the grid. This reel doesn’t contain symbols; it only contains multipliers. On every free spin, whatever multiplier lands in the golden center frame of this fourth reel is applied to any winning lines you hit.

I actually really like one specific rule Onlyplay added here: a multiplier is only removed from the reel if it successfully boosts a win. If it lands on a dead spin, it stays in the rotation and can appear again.

This fourth reel is the only way to get anywhere near the game’s 3,400x maximum win. You are praying that a solid fruit combination lines up on the exact same spin that a massive multiplier lands in the golden frame.

The Math: Proceed with Caution

Greece Fruits is highly volatile, and it behaves exactly like it. During my session, I hit a brutal dry stretch of about ten dead spins in a row, and my base game returns were pretty dismal.

A major warning for players: This game runs on variable RTP ranges. While the default is an acceptable 95.50%, the version I played was set to 94.00%, and casinos can set it as low as 90.00%. Because the game doesn’t display the RTP on the main screen, you must open the rules text to check which version you are playing before you spin.

However, if you are a fan of classic 3×3 setups and enjoy the high-risk, high-reward chase of a bonus round multiplier, it has its charms. Just keep in mind that Onlyplay released Lava Fruits shortly after this, a 5×3 fruit game at the same 95.50% RTP that also lists free spins, multipliers, jackpots and a bonus buy, with a max win of 6,842x, about double. For my money, I’d probably head over to the volcano instead of staying in Greece.
