ELK Studios rarely misses when it comes to grid slots, and their early 2022 release, Mystic Orbs, is a prime example of why. Set inside a damp, mossy, Asian-inspired cave, this 5×5 cluster-pays slot is a quiet, handsome game. But under the hood, this is a highly volatile chain-reaction engine.
On top of its cascading wins, Mystic Orbs runs all of its features through a single “Feature Row” sitting above the main grid.

Six Modifiers Above the Grid
Everything in Mystic Orbs revolves around the five sockets at the top of the screen. When an Orb, which is a wild, lands on the grid, it activates whatever modifier is sitting directly above it in the Feature Row, and then vanishes. If you’re lucky enough to land a Charged Orb, it fires off the entire row at once.
ELK has packed six different modifiers into this row:
- Multiplier: Adds its value to a running total that applies to the current win and every win after it in the round.
- Upgrade: Upgrades a specific symbol type to a higher value or turns them into Wilds for up to three avalanches.
- Orb Siege: Copies a neighboring symbol into up to four adjacent spaces.
- Extra Life: A lifesaver that grants a fresh symbol drop when your cascades run dry.
- Bonus: Triggers the Free Drops round.
- Orb Payout (bonus game only): Pays out a flat multiple of your bet.
What I really appreciate here is the UI. The game is incredibly readable. When several modifiers fire together they go in a fixed order by type, Multiplier first, then Orb Payout, Upgrade, Orb Siege, Extra Life and Bonus, so the Multiplier always applies to the clusters created by the features firing after it. You always know exactly what’s about to happen before the cascade resolves.
The Five-Orb Ladder
Getting out of the base game and into the bonus is where Mystic Orbs shows its teeth. You can trigger the Free Drops by either hitting the Bonus tile with an orb, or by collecting five orbs to fill the golden ladder on the left side of the grid.
All five orbs must be collected in a single spin sequence. When your cascades stop, the ladder resets to zero.
Over my spins, I found this to be a pretty steep requirement. I had plenty of teases where a favorable drop landed two or three orbs, moving me up the ladder, only for the chain reaction to die out. The base game will throw you a bone here and there to keep your balance afloat, but stringing five orbs together organically requires a serious stroke of luck.
Free Drops and the Persistent Multiplier
If you do trigger the bonus, you are awarded 5 Free Drops. That doesn’t sound like much, but the math changes drastically here.
First, the multiplier becomes persistent: it doesn’t reset between free drops. Second, the Orb Payout tile is added to the feature row. Because the Orb Payout is multiplied by your running multiplier, hitting this late in a good bonus round can pay out big chunks of your bet instantly. Plus, collecting five orbs during the feature awards extra drops.
You are going to need that compounding multiplier to get anywhere near the 10,000x max win. A quick look at the paytable reveals that standard wins cap out at 18 symbols. This means a cluster of 25 symbols covering the whole board pays the exact same as a cluster of 18 (2,000x for the top symbol, 100x for the lowest). The only way to bridge the gap to the 10,000x cap is by building a massive multiplier.
The X-iter Menu and RTP
As with most modern ELK games, Mystic Orbs features the X-iter buy menu. It’s priced brilliantly to let you test the game’s potential:
- 5x: Guaranteed orb and feature.
- 25x: Three drops with a persistent multiplier.
- 50x: One drop where every orb is a Charged Orb.
- 100x: Standard Bonus.
- 500x: Super Bonus (Every orb that lands during the feature is a Charged Orb).
The 500x Super Bonus is the absolute dream scenario here, multipliers stacking, upgrades turning everything to wilds, and the whole row firing on every orb. It’s the most realistic path to the max win, though highly risky.
My one real gripe with this game is the RTP. At 95.0%, it sits below the industry average of 96%. However, it is worth noting that the RTP remains exactly the same whether you are spinning the base game or buying the 500x Super Bonus, meaning you aren’t penalized for using the X-iter menu.
Mystic Orbs is a beautifully designed, highly volatile grid slot that rewards patience. The Feature Row mechanic is incredibly satisfying when a chain reaction pops off, and the readable UI makes it a joy to watch. While the 95% RTP and the tough base-game bonus trigger might turn off casual players, high-risk players who love compounding multipliers and feature-buy options will find a lot to love in this cave.
