Mancala Gaming is taking us back to the frontier with Cactus Crew: Wild Duels, a 5×4, 20-payline slot that promises high-noon standoffs and some serious multiplier action. After spending a good amount of time spinning the cylinders on this one, I can tell you it has plenty of firepower, but you’re going to need a lot of patience to actually hit your target.

The Base Game: Chasing the Bullets

The RTP is 96%, but the standard paytable is incredibly thin. Most three-of-a-kind combinations at the bottom end won’t even refund your base stake. It becomes obvious very quickly that the base game is just a vehicle for the expanding wilds.

There are two types of wilds to look out for. The plain Expanding Wild simply fills its reel with a x1 multiplier (landing one on reel 2 netted me a modest 6.5x return). But the symbol you are really hunting is the 5-Bullet Wild.

When this lands, it expands and fires up to five bullets, each revealing a multiplier between 1x and 5x. The game adds these together to give you a massive reel multiplier. I actually caught a great example of this on my third spin: a wild took over reel 1, fired a 2x and a 3x bullet, and applied a 5x multiplier to four separate paylines for a quick 17.5x payout. When the game sets up perfectly like this, it feels fantastic.

The “Phantom Multiplier” Frustration

However, I have to point out a glaring mechanical flaw that makes the base game incredibly frustrating at times.

Because the 20 paylines run strictly from left to right, a wild reel is entirely useless unless a winning combination actually reaches it. The problem? Cactus Crew goes ahead and draws the full expanded wild, complete with dramatic bullet animations and tallied multipliers, even when the wild connects to nothing.

Other studios have solved this. For example, Hacksaw Gaming’s LIT City only expands a wild if it actively completes a win. Here, the dead multipliers just mock you from the board. I watched a 5-bullet wild land on reel 4, fire three times to build a juicy 6x multiplier, and pay absolutely zero because the lines stopped short. The game frequently paints the picture of a massive hit without delivering the payout to match, which feels like a cheap tease.

The Free Spins: Locking in the 10,000x Dream

Triggering the bonus requires landing 3 to 5 scatters, which awards 8 to 12 free spins. You can toggle on the Lucky Bet, which doubles your total bet to raise the chance of scatters landing, though the rules don’t say by how much. Across a couple dozen standard spins, I was frequently teased with two scatters, but the third was highly elusive.

If you do manage to breach the bonus round, the game completely shifts gears. Scatters and the plain x1 Expanding Wild leave the reels, though the sheriff-star Wild stays. The 5-Bullet Wild stays, but it’s joined by a new Revolver Cylinder Wild, which can fire multipliers, a doubler, or award extra spins.

Crucially, all wilds become sticky for the duration of the feature.

This is where the game’s 10,000x max win potential hides. The blueprint for a mega win is clear: you need a 5-Bullet wild to lock in on reels 1 or 2 early in the spins, a Cylinder wild to double its value, and a steady stream of premium Whiskey symbols connecting through those multipliers.

It’s a solid, good-looking game with a great core mechanic, but you need the stomach for a bumpy ride to get the most out of it.
