The casino lobby is absolutely choked with “Book of…” slots. Ever since Book of Dead blew up, every studio has tried to cash in on the expanding-symbol formula. So, when I saw ELK Studios was dropping their famous cartoon fighting bull into an Egyptian tomb, I was skeptical. Was this just a lazy cash grab?

Having played Book of Toro, I can happily say it’s not. ELK has taken the standard 5×3, 10-payline layout and injected it with the chaotic energy of their Wild Toro series. It’s not perfect, the 95% RTP is a bit of a bummer, but it’s one of the most entertaining “Book” slots I’ve played this year.

The Base Game: Surviving the Dead Spins

If you know Book slots, you know the math model. You’re playing on 10 fixed lines, paying left to right. The premium explorer and mid-tier symbols pay from just two of a kind, while the card royals (A, K, Q, J, 10) require three.

Base game hits are what you’d expect from a highly volatile slot: about a quarter of spins pay something, and my spins were screens full of card royals and frustrating teasers where scarabs land just out of position. A pair of premiums will barely keep your balance afloat. But that’s where the Toro mechanics step in to save the day.

Toro Goes Wild: Base Game Carnage

The game completely shifts gears when the Bull lands on reel five. He acts as a Walking Wild, stepping one reel to the left per respin until he walks off reel one, and on his own he leaves nothing behind.

Things get really spicy when the Mummies show up. Landing two or more Mummies locks them in place for a respin. If Toro and the Mummies are on the screen at the same time, the Toro Goes Wild mechanic triggers. The bull charges vertically, then horizontally, knocking Mummies off the board and leaving a trail of Wilds in his wake.

The best part about this feature is that Book (scatter) symbols stay sticky while Toro is walking. The game waits until the bull leaves the screen to evaluate if you’ve triggered the bonus, turning what is usually a dead base-game feature into a brilliant scatter-collection phase.

Free Spins: The Counter That Waits for the Bull

Land 3, 4, or 5 Books and you’ll trigger 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. Standard Book rules apply: a random symbol is chosen to expand across full reels and pay anywhere, ignoring paylines. You can also retrigger the bonus to get extra spins and up to three different expanding symbols.

But here is where ELK really cooked: the pause mechanic.

If you land Toro or trigger a Mummy respin during your free spins, the free spin counter pauses. The entire Walking Wild or Toro Goes Wild sequence plays out without costing you a single free spin, and your expanding symbol stays active the whole time. Toro will even substitute for your expanding symbol on his reel (as long as a real one lands elsewhere). It’s a big value-add that makes the bonus round feel incredibly action-packed.

The Snag: The Multiplier Paywall

As much as I enjoyed the game, I have to be fair and point out a slight frustration with the math model. The game offers five X-iter feature buys, ranging from 10x your bet for a guaranteed Mummy respin up to 500x for the Super Bonus.

The standard bonus is great, but the game’s 10,000x max win potential relies heavily on the Super Bonus. Why? Because the Super Bonus introduces a progressive multiplier. It starts at x1 and climbs with every free spin and every respin. Because Toro’s walking feature and Mummy respins push that multiplier up while pausing the spin counter, things can get out of hand quickly.

The kicker? If you trigger the free spins naturally (or buy the standard 100x bonus), that multiplier doesn’t exist. The true chase in Book of Toro is locked inside that 500x tier.

If you can look past the 95% RTP and the fact that the progressive multiplier is largely reserved for high-rolling bonus buyers, Book of Toro is an absolute blast.
