Backseat Gaming is taking us back to the dusty frontier with Draw at Dusk, a western-themed slot that plays out across a wide 7-reel, 5-row grid. Expect high volatility, multiplier-heavy features, and a base game that will absolutely test your patience. The RTP is 96.01%, though the studio also lists 94.01%, 92.01% and 90.01% versions a casino can run instead, so it’s worth checking which one you’re on.

The Core Mechanic: Living on the Edge (Reels)

The entire math model of Draw at Dusk is built around the first and seventh reels. The middle of the board is just filler waiting for one of two gunslingers to show up on the edges:

  • Quickdraw Carter (Reel 1): He lands as a full Wild Reel, and when he lands alone in the base game he shoots between 2 and 10 individual Wilds onto the grid, each carrying a 2x up to 100x multiplier.
  • Deadshot Vance (Reel 7): Also a full Wild Reel, but when he lands alone he shoots between 1 and 5 full Wild Reels onto the board, each carrying a 2x up to 100x multiplier.

One crucial thing to note: multipliers here are additive, not multiplicative. If you land a 10x and a 5x on a winning payline, you get a 15x boost, not 50x. Hacksaw’s upcoming Willy Wildwing adds its multipliers the same way, but Draw at Dusk stretches the rule across a much wider grid and a higher 12,500x max win.

The Base Game: A Brutal Grind

I have to be fair here: without Carter or Vance, the base game is remarkably quiet. Actually, “quiet” might be an understatement.

During my sessions, the 7×5 grid delivered long stretches of dead spins. In one particularly cold run of about 20 spins, I hit nothing, save for a few microscopic wins on low-paying card symbols (we’re talking 0.2x to 1.2x returns).

Even when the gunslingers do show up, it’s not a guaranteed payday. I had Vance land alone to drop a 3x Wild Reel, only for the spin to dead-end because no symbols connected across this massive 7-reel board. Later, a 2x Wild Reel from Vance merely doubled a short Kings line for a measly 2x return. You are entirely at the mercy of the outer reels here; when they don’t land, your balance will slowly bleed out.

Free Spins: The Dueling Feature

The game finally wakes up when Carter and Vance land on the same base game spin, triggering 10 Free Spins.

During the bonus, both gunslingers become sticky Wild Reels on columns 1 and 7 for the duration of the feature. But instead of just spinning the reels, every spin kicks off with a duel between the two. The rules of the bonus depend on which of the three tiers you trigger:

  • Quickdraw Bonus: Only Carter can place his individual Wilds. If Vance wins the duel, you just get a standard spin with the two edge wilds and no extra multipliers.
  • Deadshot Bonus: The reverse. Only Vance can place his Wild Reels. If Carter wins the duel, nothing happens.
  • Deadshot vs Quickdraw: This is the holy grail. There are no losing outcomes. Whoever wins the duel is guaranteed to place their respective multipliers on the board.

In the lower two tiers, losing the duel leaves you with a plain spin and nothing but the two edge Wild Reels. The tension before the reels even stop spinning is fantastic, but it can be incredibly frustrating to watch the “wrong” gunslinger win the shootout.

How Do You Actually Hit the Max Win?

Because the multipliers are additive, you can’t rely on multiplying multipliers to do the heavy lifting. You need a high base payout.

The paytable is heavily backloaded. Card symbols and mid-tier items like whiskey bottles and saddlebags barely move the needle (a 7-of-a-kind saddlebag pays just 10x). To get anywhere near that 12,500x cap, you need the top premium symbol: the Crossed Pistols, which pay 50x for a 7-of-a-kind line.

To cap this game, you need a full line of pistols running through a total multiplier sum of 250x. Realistically, this means you need Vance to win a duel and drop several high-value Wild Reels, creating a bridge for the premium symbols to cross the board.

Draw at Dusk is not for the faint of heart. It is a highly volatile beast that requires a lot of patience to get through a tough base game. However, if you are a fan of Hacksaw-style mechanics and love the tension of a duel on every bonus spin, the dueling feature here is incredibly well-executed.
