Constant action and exploding base game wins are not what this one is about. Big Bad Towers is a fairytale-themed 5×3 slot with 243 ways to win, but it’s built entirely around delayed gratification.

After a few dozen spins and one natural bonus, I can tell you this much: this game is all about surviving a relatively quiet base game in hopes of building a massive payout at the very end of the free spins. Here is my honest breakdown of how it actually plays.

The Base Game: A Test of Patience

Aesthetically, the game is charming enough. You’ve got a cast of fairytale characters, with the King being your premium symbol (though he only pays a modest 3x your bet for a five-of-a-kind). There’s also a Green Dragon wild, but it’s restricted to the middle three reels, meaning it can help extend a win, but it’ll never start one for you.

The main feature keeping you company during the base game is the Mystery symbol, drawn as a tower gate. When the reels stop, any gates in view swing open to reveal the same matching symbol.

But because of the strict left-to-right pay rules, these mystery symbols can be incredibly frustrating. I had a spin where nine mystery gates landed across the back three reels. They all opened to reveal the Red Hood character. But, because nothing on the first two reels matched, the spin paid nothing.

As a result, the base game can feel like a bit of a grind. Out of roughly three dozen spins, only a handful yielded any return, with my best natural hit being a 1.3x return from a mix of cannons and catapults. You are very much just biding your time here.

Triggering the Siege (and a Nice Surprise)

To get into the bonus, you’re officially looking for six Crown scatters. However, the game throws you a lifeline in the form of colored flags that land on specific reels (Blue on reel 2, Green on reel 3, and Red on reel 4).

Any single flag can randomly trigger the free spins on its own. In fact, during my session, the bonus triggered off a solitary Red flag on the fourth reel with zero crowns in sight, a very welcome surprise when the base game was running dry.

The Bonus: Put Away the Paylines, Start Building

If you’ve played Playtech’s Age of the Gods: Wonder Warriors, you’ll be familiar with the expanding grid concept here, but Big Bad Towers handles it a bit differently.

Once you’re in the free spins, standard payline wins are completely switched off. You won’t win a dime from matching symbols. Instead, it becomes a pure collection game. Your only goal is to land Crowns, which place persistent frames on the grid or upgrade existing ones.

How well you do here depends heavily on which flags triggered the feature:

  • Blue Flag: Expands the grid up to 6 rows (giving you way more real estate to land crowns).
  • Green Flag: Drops a bunch of random frames onto the board before your first spin.
  • Red Flag (The VIP): This is the one you really want. It allows your frames to upgrade to Level 4. Without the red flag, your frames are capped at Level 3.

The Grand Finale: Tower Prizes

The free spins are just a build phase. The actual excitement doesn’t happen until your spins run out. Once they do, every frame you’ve built turns into a stone tower and reveals a cash prize based on its level.

  • Level 1 towers offer mere table scraps (around 0.4x to 0.5x).
  • Level 3 towers can reach a very respectable 100x.
  • Level 4 towers (Red Flag required) activate a special prize reel that can spin in up to 1,000x your bet.

During my bonus round, I managed to build nine towers. The smaller frames trickled in a few times my bet, but my single Level 4 tower spun in a 20x prize, bringing my total feature win to 28.4x. It wasn’t a massive payday, but it showed me exactly how the math model works.

What It All Comes Down To

Big Bad Towers runs at a 95.9% RTP and is a highly specific type of slot. The entire game hinges on a very simple sequence: grinding through a quiet base game, hoping to carry the Red flag into the bonus, building your frames, and holding your breath on the final spin.

The delayed payout creates genuine tension at the end of the bonus, and the random flag triggers keep hope alive during dead spins. The flip side is a base game that is incredibly weak, with mystery gates too easily blocked by a dead first reel.
