Playtech’s “Blitz” games have been around for a while now, with titles like Rhino Blitz paving the way. Cougar Blitz doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It sticks to the familiar Blitz formula: a 6×4 grid, 4,096 ways to win, and a highly volatile math model centered around a single free spins feature.

But does it have enough bite? I played roughly 200 spins of it to find out.

The Base Game: It All Hangs on Reel One

If there is one thing you need to understand about Cougar Blitz before you hit spin, it’s this: everything lives or dies on the first reel.

Because this is a 4,096-ways game that pays strictly left-to-right, and the Diamond Wilds only drop on reels two through six, a combination must start on the leftmost column. You can land an absolute dream setup of premium animal symbols on the right side of the board, but if reel one blanks, the spin is dead.

Because of this setup, the game doesn’t rely on massive single-line payouts. Instead, it’s all about building “ways.” The Cougar is the top premium and crucially pays from just two-of-a-kind. Landing a single Cougar on reel one and a stack of them on reel two will yield a nice return before the game even calculates the rest of the board.

My Experience: During my 180-round playtest, the base game was actually where I made most of my returns, though it was a bumpy ride. It’s a volatile slot, meaning you will sit through dry spells, my worst was a streak of a dozen dead spins. However, when things line up, the ways-multiplier does its job. My best base game hits were a 30x payout from a pack of Coyotes across eight ways, and a 15x hit from King royals over four ways. You’ll also see a lot of two-scatter teasers, which adds to the tension (and occasionally the frustration).

Free Games: Wilds That Add, Not Multiply

There is no feature buy here, so you’ll have to grind it out the old-fashioned way. Landing three or more scatters triggers the Free Games, starting with 8 spins for a standard three-scatter trigger.

Once inside, those Diamond Wilds finally get to stretch their legs. While they only substitute in the base game, in the bonus, any wild that connects with a win will reveal a random multiplier of x2, x3, or x5.

However, to be completely fair to our readers, I have to point out a mechanical catch: The game handles multiple wilds additively, not multiplicatively. If you land a x2 and a x3 wild in the same winning way, they combine to make a x5 multiplier, not a x6. Because the wilds don’t multiply against each other, a single win with two wilds maxes out at x10.

Because of this cap on single-spin explosions, the entire bonus relies on retriggers. Fortunately, the game is generous here: a pair of scatters is enough for 5 more free spins, and the round can keep extending itself as often as they land.

My Experience: A bonus is only as good as the wilds it drops, and my playtest was a brutal reminder of high volatility. My single trigger gave me the baseline 8 spins. I caught zero retriggers, and didn’t land a single wild in a winning way. I walked away with two basic combination wins totaling a miserable 4x my stake. Ouch.

Max Win Potential: Chasing the 13,373x

The game runs at a 95.94% RTP, and Playtech advertises a hefty 13,373x maximum win, though it’s worth noting this number comes from a massive 3-billion-spin simulation.

Getting anywhere near that cap requires a very specific perfect storm. Because the wild multipliers add rather than multiply, you aren’t going to hit the max win on one lucky drop. Instead, you need a marathon bonus round. You are chasing endless two-scatter retriggers, combined with stacked Cougars on reel one, and a heavy scattering of multiplier wilds to keep the ways-count and payouts churning over dozens of spins.
