If there is one thing ELK Studios knows how to do, it’s build a world. Lake’s Five is a clear, cartoonish nod to Ocean’s Eleven, featuring a crew of dapper animals pulling off a heist against a neon-soaked, moonlit city backdrop. Throw in a genuinely catchy 70s disco-funk soundtrack, and the presentation is top-tier.

But as any seasoned slot player knows, a good soundtrack doesn’t pay the bills. The mechanics under the hood of this 5×4 grid are highly innovative, but they can also be incredibly strict.

The Base Game

The tough news comes first, and it is about the base game.

The game uses 178 “connecting paylines.” Instead of traditional straight lines, winning combinations link adjacent symbols that touch diagonally or horizontally. It sounds like a wide net, but it’s surprisingly fragile. During my session (playing at €1.00 a spin), I had a board showing a stack of high-paying Elephants on reel two and Monkeys on reel five. The payout? Zero. Because I was missing a connecting symbol on reel three, the whole chain died.

With no natural wilds in the base game and a rather low hit frequency of 18%, you are going to see a lot of dead spins. The top five-of-a-kind premium symbol only pays 10x your bet. The base game only exists for one reason: to hunt for the keys.

The Break-In Respins: A Great Teaser

The game’s scatter symbol is a key, which only lands on reels 1, 3, and 5. If you manage to land two of them, you trigger the Break-In Respins.

I actually really like this feature. It’s not a full bonus, but a persistent chase for that elusive third key. The two keys you landed turn into Wilds, and with every respin, they drop down one row while the rest of the board spins. The feature ends the moment only one wild is left on the board, or straight away if a third key shows up. If you catch your keys at the top of the reels, you get a solid handful of respins to hunt for the third key. If they land on the bottom row? You get one quick respin and it’s over. It keeps the tension high.

The Heist Bonus

If you land three keys, you finally trigger The Heist Bonus, starting with 10 free spins. This is where Lake’s Five completely redeems itself.

The bonus round is progressive. As you spin, you want to keep collecting keys on specific reels to unlock three different Wild modifiers:

  • 3 Keys on Reel 1: Unlocks Walking Wilds (they move one reel right per spin).
  • 3 Keys on Reel 3: Unlocks Sticky Wilds (they lock in place).
  • 3 Keys on Reel 5: Unlocks Climbing Wilds (they move up one row per spin).

Every key you collect also adds +1 free spin to your total, meaning this round can extend significantly if you get on a hot streak. Watching your bonus build from a standard free spin round into a wild-heavy frenzy is incredibly satisfying.

Multiplier Collisions & The Max Win

So, how do you actually hit that 2,160x max win? It’s all about traffic jams.

The true potential of this slot unlocks when you have multiple wild types on the board at the same time. If a Walking Wild and a Climbing Wild end up on the exact same space, they crash into each other and create a 2x Multiplier. If three wilds collide, you get a 3x Multiplier. Any payline that runs through these stacked wilds gets multiplied by that figure. This is the only way to get multipliers in the game.

A quick warning about the final spin: On your very last free spin, all Walking and Climbing wilds will dash across the screen, leaving a beautiful trail of wilds behind them. It looks amazing and fills the screen with wilds, but it’s slightly deceptive. Those “trail” wilds don’t generate multipliers. Your biggest payouts will almost always come from the spins before the finale, when the wilds are actively colliding and stacking.

ELK Studios created a brilliant mechanic with the colliding wilds. Reaching the top requires a perfect storm of keys and wild collisions, but when the crew finally pulls off the heist, it’s a thrill to watch.
