Nolimit City

Nolimit City is famous for its trademarked “xMechanics”. xNudge is a wild that slides up or down until it fills the whole reel, and every step it takes bumps up its value by 1x. xWays is a symbol that splits open into a stack of matching symbols, suddenly expanding your ways to win mid-spin. xSplit literally slices every symbol to its left in two, then turns into a wild. xBomb is a wild that blows up, clears out the surrounding symbols to trigger a drop, and boosts the win for the next drop.

You won’t find these mechanics in many other places. Check out San Quentin xWays, Fire in the Hole xBomb, or Mental to see how it plays when these features start stacking together.

Believe it or not, the studio used to make fairly tame, low-volatility games. Their breakout hit was Tombstone (2019), but xNudge actually debuted earlier in a little-played game called Hot Nudge. Reusing it in Tombstone was the lightbulb moment where the studio finally found its direction.

Extreme volatility is the whole point. Most of their slots are rated “very high” volatility. A typical max win for them is around 25,000x your stake. But then you have Tombstone R.I.P at 300,000x, and Tombstone Slaughter: El Gordo’s Revenge at 500,000x. Even the studio’s own site warns players that long dry spells are completely normal here.

Despite those max wins, the return to player is pretty standard, hovering right around 96%. Also, their sequels don’t automatically raise the max win. The Tombstone series bounced from 300,000x down to 16,480x, up to 500,000x, and then settled at 20,000x for Tombstone Begins.

Nolimit City goes dark, dystopian, and sometimes downright disturbing on purpose. We’re talking asylums (Mental), brutal prison riots (San Quentin), and public hangings (Tombstone R.I.P). They also rarely bother with traditional jackpots.

If you want a break from the madness, look for their “Labs” series. Games like Outsourced: Slash Game and Outsourced: Payday are simpler, medium-volatility experiments with more relaxed max wins.

Evolution Gaming bought the studio in 2022, but Nolimit City says it keeps running its own course.
