If you play as many 6×5 scatter-pays slots as I do, you start to feel like you’ve seen it all. Most rely on the standard formula: land eight matching symbols, watch them pop, and pray for a big multiplier to drop into the gaps. But with Thunder Reckoning, the developer has flipped the script.

Instead of focusing on the symbols falling into the grid, this game wants you to focus on the empty space they leave behind. It’s an innovative mechanic, but as I found out during my session, it requires a fair bit of patience.

The Base Game: Fuel for the Fire

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: the standard paytable in Thunder Reckoning is notoriously flat. If you land the minimum eight-symbol combination, eight of the nine symbols in the game will actually pay you less than your stake.

But that’s by design, and the overall return still sits at 96.76% according to PG Soft. The standard symbols are really just fuel for the game’s core mechanic: grid activation.

When a winning cluster pops, it leaves a grey highlight on those grid positions. If a subsequent tumble during that same spin lands a win on those exact spots, the cell fully activates. Once the spin’s cascade sequence finally ends, any fully lit cells transform into Prize symbols.

Chasing the Blocks

This is where the game gets interesting. A single lit cell pays out a meager 0.25x to 1x your bet. (Over about a hundred spins, the board churned out over a hundred of these single cells, and almost all of them paid the absolute floor of 0.25x).

However, if you manage to connect adjacent lit cells, they merge into larger blocks. Connect four cells into a 2×2 block, and the payout jumps to between 5x and 10x. The blocks can keep growing all the way up to a full 5×6 grid.

When the cascades go your way, it’s incredibly satisfying to watch. I managed to hit a 2×2 block a handful of times, though they stubbornly stuck to the 5x minimum. My best base-game hit came from a 2×2 block alongside six single cells, netting a 6.9x return. Another long cascade lit up 14 separate cells without merging any of them, paying 4.5x in spare change.

Ten Spins With a Half-Lit Grid

The scatter symbols here have one job: triggering the Free Spins. Landing three will get you 10 spins, and this is where the game’s true potential unlocks.

In the bonus, the grid starts half-activated, meaning it only takes one win on a cell to fully light it up. Even better, the grid’s memory doesn’t reset between spins. Your progress sticks around for the entire feature, and all your merged Prize blocks pay out in one lump sum at the very end.

Unfortunately, the bonus is elusive. I didn’t manage to trigger it organically during my 100-spin session, ending up down about 27x overall. The game loves to tease you with two scatters, but that crucial third one is a tough catch.

With a max win capped at 5,000x your bet, the ultimate goal is clear: you need a cascade chain long enough to light all 30 positions and form a full 5×6 Prize block.

Should you play it?

If you’re looking for massive, instant base-game hits, this probably isn’t the slot for you. But if you enjoy grid games where the tension builds with every tumble, Thunder Reckoning offers a genuinely fresh take on the scatter-pays genre.
