If you’re the kind of player who gets exhausted by ten-minute bonus rounds, cascading reels, and complex multipliers, GameArt has a palate cleanser for you. Bursting Crowns 40 is a classic, no-nonsense fruit slot. There are no free spins here, no mini-games, and no gimmicks. It’s just you, the reels, and the hunt for Red 7s.

Following up on their earlier Bursting Crowns 5, GameArt has scaled the grid up to 40 fixed paylines and tripled the max win potential to a respectable 3,000x your stake. On paper its RTP, max win and volatility match GameArt’s own Tractor Frenzy 40 on the same 5×3 board, but does this retro formula hold up in today’s market?

The Paytable: All About the 7s

Let’s be completely fair from the start: this game is incredibly top-heavy. The base game is the entire game, and Bursting Crowns 40 puts almost all of its payload into a single symbol.

The Red 7 is your holy grail. Landing five on a line pays out a sweet 75x your bet. However, the drop-off after that is steeper than a cliff. The next best symbols (the Gold Dollar Sign and the Watermelon) top out at just 5x for a five-of-a-kind.

Because the math is so heavily weighted toward the top, you have to adjust your expectations for the base game. Over my spins, the lower-tier fruits act more like partial refunds than actual wins. Three lemons or cherries on a line pay a flat 0.25x your stake. You’ll see a lot of these “fractional” wins. They keep your balance ticking over and the reels moving, but you’re really just treading water while waiting for the 7s to line up.

Expanding Wilds & Cash Scatters

To help you connect those elusive 7s, the game features a Crown Wild on reels 2, 3, and 4. I actually really like how GameArt programmed this: it’s a conditional expanding wild. It will only expand to cover the full reel if doing so actually creates a winning combination. If it doesn’t, it just stays a single symbol. When it does pop, it can connect multiple lines across the 40 paylines, which is where your bigger base-game hits will come from.

You’ll also notice two Scatters on the board, a Pink Star (reels 1, 3, and 5) and a Gold Bell (all reels). A quick warning to modern slot players: do not get excited when these land! They don’t trigger a bonus round. They are purely cash-paying scatters. The Star pays a flat 20x for three, while the Gold Bell scales all the way up to 500x if you land five.

A Quick QoL Tip: The Gamble Feature

Bursting Crowns 40 includes a classic card gamble feature after every win (guess the color to double your money, or the suit to quadruple it).

Because this is turned on by default, I noticed a slight lag in the gameplay pacing. When you hit a win, the money sits pending on the screen waiting for you to choose whether to gamble or collect. Pressing “spin” collects the money and starts the next round, but it makes the balance feel like it’s lagging a step behind the action. Pro tip: If you just want to spin in peace, go into the settings and turn the gamble feature off. It removes the pause entirely and makes the game flow beautifully.

I finished my evening about 13x my stake down, with most of the wins well under 2x. It wasn’t a brutal session by any means.

Should you play it?

If you need a bonus round to stay entertained, skip this one. But if you are a purist who loves the arithmetic chase of a classic fruit machine, Bursting Crowns 40 is a very fair, well-designed slot. You know exactly what you are chasing: a full screen of Red 7s with expanded Crown Wilds in the middle, or five scattered Gold Bells. It’s old-school gambling at its most straightforward.
