If you’ve spent any time spinning grid slots over the last couple of years, you already know that multiplier spots are the reigning champions of cluster-pays mechanics. With Aztec Totem, PoggiPlay throws their hat into the ring. It’s a 7×7 cascading grid slot on a well-worn formula, with just enough of its own flavor to warrant a spin.
I sat down with this one for a few hundred spins to see how it holds up.
Building the Grid: Real Estate is Everything
In Aztec Totem, the actual symbols landing on the board almost don’t matter: it’s all about the ground beneath them.
The game runs on a standard cluster-pays and tumble engine (five matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically create a win, then vanish to let new symbols drop in). But the real engine here is the grid itself. When you clear a winning cluster, those empty spots light up. If you manage to land another win on those exact same lit spots during the same tumble sequence, they turn into x2 multipliers.
From there, every subsequent win on that spot doubles the value: x4, x8, x16, all the way up to x128 per cell. If a new winning cluster covers multiple multiplier spots, they are added together before boosting your payout. It’s a highly satisfying mechanic when it pops off.
The Base Game: A Waiting Game
You need a remarkably lucky, long chain of cascades just to get the multipliers active, let alone high enough to pay out anything substantial. During my session, I had plenty of winning spins, but the returns were mostly small. My best base game hits were a 2.3x return from a mix of purple crystals and green masks, and a 1.6x win from a cluster of red crystals.

The paytable is incredibly top-heavy. The premium Red Jaguar mask pays a sweet 100x your bet for a cluster of 15+, but the lower-tier crystals are brutal, five blue crystals will net you a measly 0.1x your bet. Without active multipliers, the base game is a matter of treading water and scooping up pennies while you pray for scatters.

Free Spins: The Game Wakes Up
Landing three gold scatters triggers 10 Free Spins, and this is where Aztec Totem finally takes the training wheels off.
In the bonus round, the multiplier spots do not reset between spins. They hold their value and keep doubling all the way through the feature. This is also where the game’s namesake, the Totem symbol, comes into play.
The Totem is a modifier that doesn’t form wins on its own. Instead, if a winning cluster lands directly next to it, the Totem instantly doubles the multipliers of that cluster’s cells before destroying itself. It’s a brilliant little addition that helps accelerate the board’s multiplier growth much faster than you could through standard tumbles alone.

Familiar Ground
If you’re a slot veteran, you’ll recognise the shape: Pragmatic Play’s Egg Rush Jackpot Play also runs on a 7×7 cluster grid and also tops out at 5,000x.
Does the familiar formula hurt it? Not at all.
The Totem modifier in the Free Spins gives this game a slight edge in pacing once the bonus triggers. The 5,000x max win is highly volatile and will absolutely require a late-stage bonus round where the board is painted in high multipliers and a big cluster of any symbol happens to drop perfectly on top of them.
But if you love the “mark-and-double” mechanics of grid slots like this and want a fresh Aztec theme with a cool new modifier symbol in the bonus, this is a highly capable, fair alternative that is definitely worth a few rounds.
