If you’ve spent any time spinning the reels at online casinos, you’re probably intimately familiar with the 5×3, 10-payline setup. It’s the bread and butter of the industry. With Alice Time Rift, the developers have taken that classic framework, slapped on a moody Wonderland theme, and added a few clever mechanical tweaks to keep things interesting.

After spending a good while playing this one, I can tell you it’s very much a game of patience. It plays a lot like a “Book of…” game, but the addition of base-game respins and a tiered bonus system makes it stand out.

One Symbol Runs the Show

Everything in Alice Time Rift revolves around one symbol: the Time Rift, drawn as a pocket watch. Acting as both your Wild and your Scatter, it’s the engine driving the entire game.

The paytable itself is pretty standard high-volatility fare. You’ve got your low-paying card ranks (which offer a measly 0.5x for three of a kind) and four premium character symbols. Alice is the top dog here, paying out 50x your bet if you manage to line up five of her.

Base Game & Sticky Respins

The base game can be quite a grind. Most of my hits were three-of-a-kind card symbols that barely kept my balance afloat. However, the developers have thrown in a Sticky Respin feature to break up the monotony.

Whenever a Pocket Watch actually completes a winning payline, it triggers a respin. The winning symbols and the Wild lock into place, and the rest of the board spins again. If you land more winning symbols or another Watch, they lock in too, and the respins keep coming until you dead-spin.

During my session, this feature saved me from total base-game boredom. In one instance, a Watch connected with the top-hat character on reel one. Over three respins, the board slowly filled up, eventually leaving me with four lines of three for a decent 8x payout.

A quick word of warning, though: The Watch must complete a win to trigger the feature. I had a few frustrating moments where a Watch landed on the board completely isolated, and the spin just ended. It’s a bit of a tease.

The Expanding Bonus: Where the Money Is

Like most games in this genre, you’re really just playing to trigger the Free Spins. You need 3, 4, or 5 Time Rift watches anywhere in view to trigger 8, 10, or 12 Free Spins, respectively.

This is where Alice Time Rift does something I really appreciate: it rewards you for landing more scatters by upgrading your expanding symbol.

  • 3 Scatters: You get a random expanding symbol (could be a low-paying card).
  • 4 Scatters: You are guaranteed one of the four premium character symbols.
  • 5 Scatters: You are guaranteed Alice, the highest-paying symbol in the game.

Once you’re in the bonus, it plays like a classic expanding symbol game. If your selected symbol lands on at least three reels, they expand to cover the whole reel, paying out anywhere on the lines.

To help you out, any Time Rifts that land will transform into your Selected Symbol at the end of a respin sequence. Furthermore, if you manage to land two or three of your Selected Symbols on a single reel before they expand, that reel gets an x2 or x3 multiplier.

(Side note for the slot nerds: If you’ve played Pragmatic Play’s ‘Lotus Treasure – Oranje Jackpot’, you’ll notice some similarities with the 5×3 layout and expanding features, though Alice relies more on traditional paytable weight rather than coin collection).

Chasing the 7,500x Max Win

The game caps out at a very respectable 7,500x your bet.

If you do the math, a full screen of Alice at a standard 1x multiplier only pays 500x. So, how do you hit the cap? Realistically, through those x2 and x3 reel multipliers stacking up during the free spins, ideally with a few retriggers to give them more spins to work with.

If you lack the patience for the base game, there are two BET+ modes. With Bonus Boost each spin costs 1.5x your bet and doubles your chance of triggering the feature. Bonus Boost Plus costs a hefty 2.5x your bet but multiplies your trigger chance by five. Just remember, these are chances, not guarantees: neither boost promises a trigger on any given spin.

However, the tiered scatter system is a fantastic addition to the “expanding symbol” genre. Knowing that hitting 5 scatters guarantees Alice as your expanding symbol gives you a genuine “holy grail” to chase. If you’re a fan of “Book” slots but want a little more control over your bonus rounds, this one is definitely worth a few spins.
