If you played Thunderkick’s 2023 release Hot Potato, you already know the studio has a knack for turning starchy root vegetables into highly volatile multiplier engines. This one isn’t billed as a sequel, though: it puts the potato on a literal battlefield and adds some heavy artillery.

Thunderkick has more cluster-pays on the way, Shark Park among them (due in November), but this new 7×7 grid slot is all about chain reactions. But is it a triumphant victory, or will it leave your bankroll M.I.A.? Here’s our honest breakdown.

The Base Game: Building the Minefield

The core loop here is a 7×7 tumbling grid where 5 matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically create a win. When they pop, they leave behind one of three “Potato Wilds.”

These wilds don’t carry multipliers themselves. Instead, they act as detonators. When they explode, they cover a specific zone (a small square, a large square, or a full row/column) and brand a x2 multiplier into the grid itself. If an explosion hits a cell that already has a multiplier, it doubles, all the way up to a massive x128. When a new winning cluster lands on those marked cells, the multipliers are added together and applied to your win.

You’ll quickly notice that the paytable is incredibly top-heavy. A cluster of five top-tier Chef Potatoes pays exactly 1x your bet, and the lower-tier symbols require clusters of 9 to 12 just to break even. Thunderkick has built this game entirely around the multiplier engine. A cheap water bottle symbol sitting on a hot x32 cell will easily out-pay a premium symbol on a blank board. If you aren’t hitting multipliers, you aren’t getting paid.

Triggering the Artillery (When the Game Wakes Up)

To spice up the grid, the game drops five military feature symbols. However, they don’t do anything on their own. To activate them, you have to explode a Potato Wild right next to them.

When you do manage to catch one in a blast, they trigger some fantastic modifiers:

  • The Turret: Sprays three standard wilds onto the grid.
  • The Crosshair: Drops three “sniper wilds” that clear out entire rows and columns.
  • The Walkie-Talkie: Waits until your cascades finish, then calls in up to 15 wilds to save a dead spin.
  • The Satellite Dish: Acts as radar, upgrading a low-paying symbol into a mid or high-paying one.
  • The Nuke Button: The holy grail: it doubles every multiplier currently on the board and grants a final respin.

A fair warning: Because these features rely on adjacent wild explosions to trigger, the base game can be an absolute grind. During my session, I hit stretches of 8 to 10 dead spins where nothing happened. But when the mechanics finally connect, they snowball beautifully. In one base game spin, I caught a Turret, which dropped wilds that triggered a Satellite Dish, upgrading my cheap symbols into premiums and paying out a sudden 14x. It’s highly volatile, but the chain reactions are incredibly satisfying.

The Bonus Round: Persistence is Key

Landing three scatters awards 8 Free Spins. The rules here are exactly the same as the base game, with one crucial, make-or-break difference: the grid multipliers do not reset between spins.

This persistence dictates the entire bonus round. If you hit a dry spin early on, you build no multipliers, leaving you with nothing to carry forward. To get anywhere near the game’s 10,000x max win, you need your early spins to detonate enough wilds to build a cluster of x128 cells, and your late spins to drop a massive formation of premium symbols right on top of them. It’s a “do or die” bonus round.

The Math Model & Feature Buys

And frankly, this is where the game takes a bit of a hit. The default RTP is set at 94.23%, which is noticeably below the modern industry average of 96%. Worse still, Thunderkick offers a 92.23% version to operators, so always check the paytable before you spin.

If you want to skip the base game grind, you have a few options:

  • Bet+ Bonus Boost (1.7x your stake): Increases your chances of landing scatters.
  • Bet+ Battle Mode (10x your stake): Guarantees at least three military feature symbols will activate on that spin (highly entertaining, but expensive).
  • Bonus Game buy (100x your stake): Takes you straight into the 8 Free Spins.

However, players need to approach this with caution. The low base symbol values, the brutal stretches of dead spins, and the sub-par 94.23% RTP mean this battlefield will chew through a casual bankroll very quickly. It’s a fantastic game for high-volatility thrill-seekers, but low-rollers might want to sit this tour of duty out.
